DBCA: Geospatial Environmental Data Platform
Overview
The Department of Biodiversity, Conservation, and Attractions (DBCA) engaged Mechanical Rock to enhance their Dandjoo Data Platform - a geospatial web application designed to make Western Australian biodiversity data more discoverable, accessible, and usable. The project focused on improving both the Data Delivery Portal and Data Curation systems.
Challenge
DBCA needed to modernise their existing platform to support efficient and transparent decision-making for environmental assessment and approvals while ensuring seamless integration with other government platforms.

Solution
Mechanical Rock delivered comprehensive enhancements across two key areas:
Data Delivery Portal
- Implemented sophisticated search functionality with advanced filtering mechanisms
- Enhanced geospatial capabilities including:
- Search by uploaded Shapefile or polygon
- Buffer options for polygon searches
- Interactive mapping features
- Improved data retrieval performance and user experience
- Modernised software dependencies and frameworks
- Implemented geographic information system (GIS) features for spatial analysis
Data Curation System
- Enhanced data integrity and validation workflows
- Implemented automated processes for data consistency
- Added features for:
- Record visibility control
- Archive dataset categorisation
- Enhanced curation experience
- Taxonomic name validation
- Spatial accuracy verification for Western Australia records
Outcomes
The enhancements delivered by Mechanical Rock resulted in measurable improvements to both system performance and user experience. The upgraded platform now provides a more powerful, accessible, and efficient way for stakeholders to manage and explore biodiversity data. Key outcomes included:
- Successfully delivered double the initial scope under budget and ahead of schedule
- Transformed the platform into a more robust, user-centric solution
- Enhanced data management capabilities through improved spatial data handling
- Strengthened data governance and quality control processes
Key Success Factors
