CareCorner: Bringing peace of mind to families through technology

Supporting care in the home and community

CareCorner is an Australian-built care management platform for the disability and aged care sectors. It supports families caring for a loved one with complex health needs, as well as the providers who work alongside them including NDIS services, disability support organisations, allied health teams, and in-home nursing and aged care.

The CareCorner platform began with a mother's determination. Barbara, a mum in Perth, was juggling the care of her loved one, alongside remembering medical appointments and endless notes and charts, and wanted something that actually made life easier.

Today, CareCorner ensures families and support workers no longer scramble for information in stressful moments: every detail, from medications to daily routines and positive behaviour support, is tracked and instantly accessible, giving carers confidence and families a little peace of mind.

Replacing a legacy application that couldn't keep up

CareCorner's original application had been built by an offshore vendor, and over time it was slowing the pace of delivery, proving hard to maintain, and unable to scale sufficiently with the aspirations of the business.

A rewrite was the most suitable path forward to enable quicker speed to market and support the scale required by the enterprise users CareCorner planned to onboard.

CareCorner engaged Mechanical Rock to build the new application with three priorities:

  • Scalability: infrastructure improvements to meet new levels of demand,
  • Faster feature development: a redesigned data model so new features no longer require new tables and weeks of testing, and
  • A single cross-platform codebase: replacing Flutter with React Native and Expo to deliver web and mobile from one codebase.

Drawing on years of DevOps and product development expertise, the Mechanical Rock team delivered the rebuilt application on a simple, scalable cloud architecture using industry-standard technologies.

The new app cut feature delivery time in half, reduced errors following simple changes by 80%, and enabled the platform to absorb progressive enhancements quickly, such as converting reports to PDF. With a scalable platform in place, CareCorner went on to onboard larger enterprise customers, including providers like LumaBloom, SN Services, Purple Heather and Support Space.

That platform is now the foundation CareCorner continues to build on, and it has since been extended with two significant new capabilities.

Extending the platform with Positive Behaviour Support capabilities

The first major extension to the rebuilt app was Positive Behaviour Support, a feature made possible by the rebuilt platform's faster delivery cadence and shaped by months of research: the CareCorner team workshopping with providers, interviewing subject-matter experts, and learning directly from the field about best practice in Positive Behaviour Support.

Built with frontline teams in mind, Mechanical Rock and CareCorner worked closely to design and deploy the Positive Behaviour Support feature in the CareCorner app. It gives providers a shared, consistent record of behaviours of concern and how they escalate, clear documentation of which intervention strategies were used and their effectiveness, and the transparency and clinical governance the NDIS behaviour support framework expects, all while keeping the person at the centre.

It's a reflection of how CareCorner continues to be built: alongside the sector, informed by evidence, expertise and lived experience.

Reducing the documentation burden with AI-assisted care documentation

CareCorner's customers operate in a highly regulated, paperwork-heavy sector, where documentation competes directly with participant-facing care time. The patient overview carries particular weight: it is what a new support worker reads when they first attend a participant, what a family member receives when care arrangements change, and what auditors expect to find current on file. Producing it well requires the author to stitch together demographics, medications, care areas, allied-health equipment, and emergency contacts into a clear, professional overview that’s appropriate for both trained support workers and family members. Producing it by hand is expensive, while producing it from a fixed template is faster but results in stilted prose that families and auditors recognise as auto-generated.

As part of the next release, Mechanical Rock replaced the templated logic with generative AI using Amazon Bedrock to produce natural, human-sounding overviews from the data already held in the platform. The overview refreshes automatically whenever care plan details change, keeping the content current. Sensitive health data remains within Australia, and the feature falls back safely if the AI is unavailable, so providers get consistent, audit-ready overviews with less effort.

Combining technical expertise with heart

The CareCorner and Mechanical Rock teams partnered closely throughout the rebuild and each extension since. Every feature and interaction was designed with empathy, keeping real people and their daily challenges at the heart of the solution.

For Mechanical Rock, CareCorner is a reminder of why we build technology in the first place: technology is powerful when used with kindness. It can make life a little simpler, a little calmer, and a lot more humane. Working on CareCorner allowed us to combine technical expertise with heart, creating a product that genuinely improves lives and it's a story we're proud to tell.
