Mech Ops

Keeping what we built together, running for you through our managed services

Sometimes running it yourself isn't the best use of your team’s time and resources

We build systems your team can own and operate. That's the point of how we work at Mechanical Rock, and for most clients it's what happens: we transfer the knowledge, they take it from there.

But owning a system and wanting to run it day-to-day are different decisions. Some teams don't have the people to carry a 24/7 operational load. Others have them and would rather point them at the work that differentiates the business.

MechOps is for those situations: ongoing monitoring, support and maintenance for products once they're live, so they don't get orphaned the moment the build project wraps up.

Is MechOps right for you?

MechOps is designed for products and teams that:

  • have moved past the build phase and need to run reliably in production
  • were designed or built by Mechanical Rock, in whole or in significant part
  • would rather pay for outcomes like uptime and response times than carry the fixed cost of an underused internal platform team
  • have decided that operating this particular system isn't where their engineers add the most value

If you'd rather run it yourselves, that's the outcome we build for anyway. We'll make sure your team is set up to do it properly. Chat to us about our consulting services →

Why MechOps exists

Building software and running it well are different disciplines. We've always built with handover in mind, so your team can operate what we've delivered and that still remains true. But what we found is that some companies get to the end of a build, look at what it takes to run it well, and make a considered call that their engineers are better used elsewhere. Without an option for that, the honest choices are an underused platform team or a product nobody is really watching.

MechOps is the third option. It isn't a substitute for capability, and it isn't a lock-in. Everything stays documented and observable, so you can take it in-house whenever it makes sense, and we'll help you make that transition.

How MechOps works

Before anything moves into MechOps, it goes through a formal handover process that checks it's genuinely ready to be operated: documentation, observability and runbooks in place, not just code that happens to run. That's the same handover we'd run if your own team were taking it on. The standard doesn't change based on who ends up holding it. Everything we support runs on a consistent, proven stack, so nothing is reinvented product to product.

Infrastructure

We use AWS to build infrastructure as the foundation.

Observability

We use Grafana for observability, so problems surface before customers find them

Service

A structured service desk for support, with clear routes and response times
